Travel Guide: Austin, Texas

A couple of weeks ago we traveled to Austin, Texas for a weekend getaway. It had been a while since we have gotten out of Dallas and really needed a break from it all. There has been a lot going on in my personal life lately, so Austin was the perfect spot for us. I have visited Austin so many times over the years, but this was the first time that we visited together. We had so much fun and I wanted to share where we stayed, what I wore, what we did and where we ate.

We decided to stay right in downtown only a couple of blocks from 6th street. I loved that we were walking distance from all the action. Brian picked out the hotel, so I didn’t even know where we were staying until we arrived in Austin. It was a nice surprise and the hotel was fabulous. The bed was really comfortable and we had a wonderful view of downtown.

I knew before we arrived that I wanted to visit the Domain. I had heard so many things about this new outdoor shopping center that I just had to check it out. I also wanted to visit the Erin Condren Flagship store and purchase a new planner.

Brian and I love to kayak together. And luckily Austin has a beautiful lake where you can kayak, paddle board and canoe. We rented a double kayak for only $20. It was such a beautiful day when we went. There were a ton of people out too! This is such a fun thing to do if you have a family or just you and your significant other.

We thought it would be fun to do a little bit of a hike while we were in Austin. We decided to see Mount Bonnell, also known as, Covert Park. It is a beautiful spot that over looks Lake Austin and surrounding hills. It is also the highest point in Austin.

Another one of our favorite things to do when in Austin is to check out Uncommon Objects vintage and antique shop. I could honestly spend hours walking around and looking at all the fun items. I collect old post cards, so I picked up a few fun ones while we were here too.

Another fun spot to hang out, eat and shop is South Congress. There are so many cute shops to stroll into after a meal. We decided to pick up some souvenirs on our way out of town on Sunday and this was the perfect spot to find a t-shirt. If you are looking for an Instagram worthy spots they have several here too!

This is our favorite spot in Austin for breakfast. We stopped here right when we arrived. I usually go for the traditional breakfast…eggs, toast and bacon. Brian got the gingerbread pancakes and loved them.

We decided to try this place for breakfast on Saturday. Brian did some research and thought this would be a great place to grab a bite and check out the historic Driskill Hotel. We had a wonderful meal. The inside of the hotel is stunning and I would highly recommend check out this place if you are in Austin. It is such a fun experience.

We stumbled in here one afternoon for a late lunch. It is a bar/restaurant with a really fun atmosphere and the chicken is so good. It is located right on 6th street, so a perfect spot to grab a bite before or after a night out.

This was my favorite meal of the whole trip. By far one of my top 10 favorite places I have ever eaten! You have to go here if you are visiting Austin. To start, we had fried calamari. For my main, I went for the poached Salmon with a side of fries (because why not?). And Brian picked the bone marrow with a side of broccoli. I am hoping we go back to Austin soon because I need to eat here again.

We had brunch here on Sunday morning. We wanted to eat at the Magnolia again, but the line was way too long and we were pretty hungry at that point. So, we decided on Enteca Vespaio. We hadn’t read any reviews on this place, but it turned out to be really good. If you are thinking about grabbing breakfast on South Congress on Sunday morning, make sure to arrive pretty early. Most places are packed and have a long wait.

  1. I’ve never been to Texas before but I think it would be really fun! This post is a great guide for when I finally get there. Thanks for sharing!

  2. The Domain is one of my favorite places in Austin. It’s a great place to shop and it’s really romantic to walk around there at night with your partner. I have to go back and check these other places out!

  3. Oh man this brings me back to my college days! Hubby went to UT Austin and I went to Texas A&M about two hours ago. I would visit him on the weekend and we’d go kayaking 🙂
